Forbes uses data from Orbis to reveal Portugal's wealthiest individuals

Francisco Fisher

Earlier this month, Forbes Portugal introduced a list of the country's 45 wealthiest people. The report was supported by data from Orbis, the world’s most powerful comparable data resource on private companies.

The Forbes Portugal report is the first of its kind that highlights 45 of the top-earning Portuguese investors and entrepreneurs. To qualify for a spot on the list, individuals need to have a net worth of more than €150 million. The combined fortune of those included in the report adds up to €24 billion total.

Who takes the top spots?

The top spot on the Forbes Portugal list goes to Maria Fernanda Amorim, whose main assets come from the energy company Galp, cork manufacturer Corticeira Amorim, and Banco Único. Amorim's fortune amounts to €4.5 billion and she is one of five women included on the list.

In second place with €3.4 billion is Alexandre Soares dos Santos whose assets come from Jerónimo Martins, a company in retail and food distribution, as well as the healthcare company Walk'in Clinics. The third wealthiest is Vitor Manuel da Silva Ribeiro whose €1.4 billion come from Alves Ribeiro Construction, Mundicenter shopping centres and Banco Invest.

Forbes Portugal notes that the number of Portuguese investors and entrepreneurs with fortunes of more than €1 million has grown from 65,000 in 2013 to 68,000 in 2017. A more detailed version of the top-45 list is available in the July/August edition of Forbes Portugal.

Orbis has information on around 300 million companies in all countries worldwide and is the go-to resource for corporate and beneficial ownership.
